Athena Sagadevan is a Ph.D. student working with Dr. Sunil Chirayath on a computational approach to develop a remote monitoring system (RMS) to safeguard spent nuclear fuel that is placed in dry cask storage. Her work includes analyzing the RMS via MCNP simulations to obtain flux profiles on the contents of the dry cask to ensure no illicit activity is taking place. A prototype RMS will be built and tested using fission sources that mimic the signatures of spent nuclear fuel. In addition, since the RMS will be under constant radiation exposure, a pressing concern would be to develop a method to characterize the degradation of detectors and its lifetime. Prior to joining Texas A&M University, Sagadevan completed her Bachelors and Masters of Science in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan in 2014 and 2016 respectively. She is also the Vice President of the Institute of Nuclear Materials and Management Texas A&M Student Chapter and is active with outreach.
